Chakwera tipped to lead MCP-UTM alliance for Malawi fresh polls

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) presidential hopeful Lazarus Chakwera will likely lead the opposition  ‘grand alliance’ in the forthcoming  fresh presidential elections, according to political analyst at Chancellor College of the University of Malawi , Happy Kayuni.

During the signing  of  an agreement on the electoral alliance  MCP and UTM Party of State vice-president Saulos Chilima  which they have formed in preparation for fresh presidential election, both

Chakwera and Chilima  did not diclosed who will be the torchbearer for the alliance.

But  Kayuni said Chakwera will likely lead the alliance in the poll because of the popularity of his MCP over UTM Party, which is less than two years old since its formation.

During the event at Kamuzu Institute for Sports,  Chilima spoke first before asking Chakwera to do so.

Ideally protocol requires that the main person at an event speaks last. In political party set-up, the president is the last one to speak.

“I do not want to read into protocol but studies that we have done before show that MCP is more popular than UTM; hence, the most likely candidate to lead the alliance is Chakwera,” said Kayuni in quotes reported by The Nation newspaper on Friday.

Kayuni said the MCP-UTM alliance withheld the torchbearer and runningmate now “to avoid antagonising some supporters who with time will get used to the arrangement.”

Speaking at the signing ceremony,  Chilima said the alliance does not mark the end of the involved parties.

“Our coming together does not mean the parties in this coalition have come to an end, no,” said Chilima, adding “ We have decided to unite and bring together all our strengths and capabilities to rescue this country from those destroying it. We want to change things in many areas.”

On his part,  Chakwera assured the audience that “this is their alliance”; hence, those that need change have the alliance to embrace.

Said Chakwera: “This is your alliance. However know that the change you require won’t be given to you on a silver platter. You will have to demand it, so demand it and make sure that you get.”

Other parties that were represented at the event included Malawi Forum for Unity and Development (Mafunde), Alliance for Democracy (Aford), Freedom Party, Umodzi Party and People’s Transformation Alliance (Petra).

Alliances that are influenced by desperate motives,always confuse people…what has happened is putting new wine in old skin bag, sure it will be torn…should we say chilima has some brilliant strategy to convince his followers,? I doubt.political maturity and strategies aren’t seen here…anyway its not too late..

A cadet inu what about DPP and UDF alliance , this one is not out of desperation.In fact Atupele was already in DPP cabinet.Why Atupele did not support Munthalika? coz he wanted to be president,and now he is dreaming to be close to it but it will be far from him, believe this, change is on your nose bro.

  4. My dear Chilima take this message. We, your supporters don’t want to look fools at the end. You have the following in all the regions of Malawi and nobody can dispute this fact. Yes, the number of votes were little that time because you started late your campaign and that you had so many stumbling blocks on your way. But believe you me, people are now aware of the Comrade Chilima and your manifesto is the best out of them all. We want you to be the torch bearer because you have no bad record what so ever. Your party is new with no scratches. Yet MCP has many atrocities which they committed from the past until now, and many of us are still fresh of remembering the ills which we faced from them. There is no way we can vote for them. We would rather vote for you a fresh one with no sin. Again, it is my belief that MCP will just use you and your votes but they will dump you. Angayambe kutidyetsa Manyi so think twice. If not, then try going it alone. Yours faithfully

    1. Respect for your opinion and hate for MCP but that does not matter in politics. Thanks for your support of the party (UTM) but your vote and that of a few other cannot make us win. The decision was reached at after thorough consultation with supporters like you, however, not everyone could be reached. After that extensive consultation, majority wanted this with very good reasons and intentions for the party. We are strong together!!!!

    2. Let’s wait for official communication from the Alliance. All I can say at the moment is: God bless the Alliance for the sake of Malawi.

    3. Actually if you do you research properly you will be educated that most of the people who committed the atrocities that you claim MCP did are now in UDF and DPP.

      As for the MCP party itself, they already apologised for or the atrocities that were committed in their name.

      But Mr Bakili Muluzi who pretend to be a saint now was the Secretary General of the MCP at the time of the alleged atrocities.

      And then we have the likes of the Dausis who are under DPP now but used to be the MYP MCP henchmen …..and yet he and his friends are saints now…

      Over 25 years now under multiparty politics but still enjoying the proceeds of the MCP development agenda why not talk about that and the corruption/ cashgates that are killing more Malawians

If you are real supporter of UTM then accept what your leader has done.The only way for the opposition to win 50+1% is by joining forces.Why ruling party has joined forces with UDF?They are looking for 50+1% following the constitution of the country.Even though Munthalika does not want to sign up the reformed bills but he wants to win following the same bills.Chilima already explained that each party on its own can not win 50+1% outright.The best way is to join forces with MCP.This is to avoid third election between two parties who will have higher votes.There is sense in what Chilima said.When you go and vote for the MCP and UTM alliance you are voting for your party leader chilima to do what is in the UTM manifesto.And when you vote for the UTM and MCP alliance you are actually voting for Chakwera if you are MCP supporter,so that the high five in the manifesto should start to be implemented.The bad scinerio is that if these parties stand on their own, this is how it Will play it’s game and DPP and UDF alliance will love to see MCP stand alone ,why they can defeat it easily but when chilima is with MCP together it is a hard rock for DPP and UDF alliance.That would be their exit wether they like it or not.The only thing DPP can do is to play delaying games, like not to sign up the reformed bills and delaying election.Malawians understand this by using your brains in your head.If chilima stand alone and comes third,he will not stand again as a candidate for the third election.This is where the DPP and UDF alliance will be happy and win, on regional grounds.The truth is that it is chilima who had brought this sadden change in reforms in Malawi and Malawians should appreciate it.   7. I don’t really know how Chilima is feeling now. I see many of his supporters going back to dpp. This boy honestly has fooled them. They thought they were dancing to the same tune. He has sold the party which becoming the mighty party in future.Now it’s true that this Chilima is a baby. He doesn’t know politics.   9. UTM manifesto though alike to that of MCP was special and all that we hoped for under UTM should be buried now in respect of this alliance, with cashgate embranced corruption is here to stay mark my words. Chakwera cannot face corruption head on, this is politics.

  13. Chilima said the one to lead the alliance was to be revealed at the signing in ceremony of the MCP-UTM alliance. Why was this not done yesterday. What is going on? Something is definitely wrong.

  14. UTM is gone under the wraps of MCP – A Party of Hate and darkness. So it means Saulosi has given up his ambition to become the next president of the Republic. The guy gave us hopes to transform Malawi but now under the MCP the UTM party will not achieve its manifesto which is distinct from that of the MCP.

    1. You are lying iwe, the manifestos are not distinct and will be achieved as time goes. Chilima will be president one day. MCP is not a party of hate and darkness.
