Mutharika fights to retain power in Malawi

Malawi’s President Peter Mutharika, who is seeking re-election, will cast his vote at Goliati Primary School at his home village, T/A Chimaliro in Thyolo district  during the Tuesday’s court-ordered election rerun  in what is shaping to be one of the most competitive polls in the country’s history.

Mutharika’s pray for re-election

The Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal last month upheld the constitutional court’s annulment of a shambolic May 2019 vote that handed Mutharika a second five-year term. It also ordered that the successful candidate must win an outright majority of 50 % plus one of total votes casts  rather than the most votes as in the past.

Mutharika, 80, who has pledged to turn Malawi into a developed nation if re-elected, is in “jovial mood” ahead of the polls, according to his press secretary Mgeme Kalilani.

The President has been campaigning on promises of stability and development and accuses the opposition of being forces of anarchy, citing the violent demonstrations that plagued the country in the aftermath of last year’s disputed election.

Mutharika,  who has partnered with another 2019 presidential candidate, Atupele Muluzi, of the United Democratic Front (UDF),  remains confident of retaining office.

While he has been credited with bolstering economic growth, he has been criticised for not clamping down on graft.

Local music hip-hop star Tay Grin, who has campaigned for Mutharika across the country, is confident voters want the DPP-UDF alliance torchbearer  to stay in power.

“He is a law-abiding leader, he is the rock we need to stand on during these chaotic times,” he said.

Some 6.8-million Malawians from a population of 18-million are registered to cast their votes between 6am and 6pm at 9 291 polling stations across the country.

Lazarus Chakwera, the leader of the country’s oldest political party and biggest opposition, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), is the maina challenger of Mutharika.

He has partnered with Saulos Chilima, leader of the newly-formed UTM Party and officially the country’s vice-president.

Presidential pretender Peter Kuwani, of the Mbakuwaku Movement for Development party, completes the list of candidates.

  1. MUTHALIK’S AND HIS WIFE’S PRAYERS DID NOT WORK ATALL BECAUSE BOTH OF THEM DO NOT RESPECT GOD WHO GIVES AND TAKES.

  2. Hahahaha, hahahaha, hahahaha !
    Koma kwachema.

Peter Mutharika wafuna Mulungu lero chifukwa chofuna kuwoneka ” God fearing”.

Zakuvutani this time around, siziphulapo kanthu konse, mwalephera.

Ndithu mwaphayipha ma albino mmbuyomu, ndipo mizimu yawo inakukwiyirani. Mwakwatana kwatana ndi Ben Phiri for years, ndiye pano manja okhota ngati utawo, basi kumafuna kukweza kwa Chauta?

You have so much blood in your hands, kadzipakirani, mudzipita ku Ndata.

Mwauponda. U President simuwunyantha, ulendo uno mugwa chagada.

  3. We can’t deny the fact that no one is perfect only Jesus lived perfect life, but you are praying and the same time sending your people to pre-mark the ballot papers and others carrying more than one voting card to vote for you, what kind of nonsense is that. Anyway maybe you are praying for repentance, forgive me, Sir. We salute you, Sir, bye-bye history recoded as being a president!

  4. Clueless Mutharika has no endearing qualities nor redeeming qualities to qualify him for the highest office on the land. Malawians have to demonstrate to even exercise their right to vote, Malawians have to demonstrate to see some semblance of democratic and transparency governance?????!!!!!! In HK Banda’s days, while admitting his shortfalls, Malawians never had to demonstrate to get essentials of life and that includes free quality university education! If you sow utsiru and umbuli you reap utsiru and umbuli and never ubwino; unfortunately owners of utsiru and umbuli do not know their utsiru and umbuli nor do they know ubwino hence much easier to ‘misrule’!!!!

  5. Just think of what the President and his Ministers are going to give up. The President will give up his 5 palaces his vehicles his security detail, his employment income, free travel anywhere in the world, his maid, tailor, cook, gardener the list goes on. Am sure he is sweating certainly not in a jovial mood unless drinking the remaining Red Wine at State House. Time for this wanna be King to Go.

  6. If he is in jovial mood then why did his BP go up in the middle of traveling from LL to BT? His convoy stopped un Ntcheu to treat the acting president

  7. NOT MUCH of a FIGHT when he campaigned only 2 days out of 60 was his Election to lose. Likely will

  8. But MEC is cheating Malawians on the figure of supposedly registered voters. The figure inludes hundreds dead Malawians.

  9. As christian dominated Malawi, let us pray to the ALMIGHTY GOD that all must go on well as we go to polls today. Secondly, contrary to the contents of this article, Peter is not in a jovial mood rather he is in a confused and desperate mood because he has been cornered in the same way Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda was cornered prior to the 1994 MCP election loss. Two Regions against one is tantamount to an outright election defeat. The much feared, the much hated 50% + 1 majority voting by the DPP administration has completely diluted and wiped out the DPP/UDF long practiced regionalism based politics.

    1. His brother won 66% in 2009. DPP has large pockets of support in the central and the north. He wins over 600,000 on the center, 200,000 in the north, and 2.8m in the south and east combined. He will continue to reign.

      1. @Mwini, there were no 2.8 million votes in the south last year. Mutharika got a total of 1.8 million in the whole country. I guess you have them printed at Ben Phiri printing press. Shame on you!

      2. dont compare Bingu and this thug, this thug cant command those votes in the nort and centre, dont think South will go to Mutharika, they depend on stealing votes e-soldiers are being beaten in the centre, JEFU-WAJEFU has been arrested, thats what they depend on, they cant win in a normal voting

      3. That was a mistake Bingu almost destroyed the Country creating high inflation to finance his sense of a need for as King like a private airplane and the most expensive cars living in luxury. Which his brother Peter believed which made him a poor leader and builder of the Country. We need a leader who wishes to uplift everyone’s life but just the few.

    2. Ukunama Christian, mamuna nzako mpachulu nkhani ndiyoti ngati Mutharika is confused then Chakwera is even more confused bcoz he thought it will be a walk over koma pano wawona kuti game ili tight.

      DPP ikuwinanso chofunika mungovomeleza basi

    1. @destroyer of liars, its you who should answer that question coz our problem is not age coz to us age is just numbers. Our focus is to make sure that crocodiles should never return again and it is only the old man who can do that!!!

  10. 200 million spent by the President on 2 buses for football clubs when so many other bigger an better things could have been done to help more people. This President has to go as his priories are all WRONG it is not the wealthy in majority but the poor living on minimum wage or lower. Better spent on Education Scholarships, Primary School Blocks or healthcare where the money will have a lasting affect and Legacy

    1. @Banda we know you don’t like DPP as such maso anu amangoona zoyipa zokhazokha. Olo mutamva kuti DPP yapeleka mankhwala ku chipatala simungayamikile. When you choose to see red you will always see red everywhere . similarly when you chose to hate DPP there is nothing the party can do that can pleases you.

But whether you like it or not the DPP ipitiliza kulamula. Chisankho ichi tikukasintha vice president basi

  11. Rigging has already been exposed, Grezerder is been caught with already voted ballots and is in Police custody. What kind of jovial mood you talking about? God will punish you people…

    1. Careful of alot of FAKE NEWS TODAY, let us wish all things will go smoothly and anything that is reported will be dealt with quickly. Our job today is to vote and we can all accept the results ad it is 50% plus one the winner for the first time.

      1. u must be an imbecile, all those evidence we have seen, Grezeder being arrested, x-soldiers being beaten and arrested and being sent by Dausi to help Mutharika rig elections

        1. Grezeder was not arrested but rescued from her burning Lodge, some retired MDF soldiers have been detained for their protection claiming to be DPP Monitors not arrested no ballots found yet MPS have released their names to the media. Innocent until proven guilty likely be released after 6pm even though likely up to no good were not found doing no good. President NOT jovial with increased surveillance.
