HRDC cautions Malawi govt against rushed decisions on Bushiri’s extradition

Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has cautioned the Malawi government against rushed decisions in handling the extradition process of Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) church leaders Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary.

Rev Sembereka: Bushiri survived an assassination attempt but despite reporting the matter to South African authorities, he was not heard.

HRDC executive member, Rev. Macdonald Sembereka further calls on authorities not to forget that prophet Bushiri is Malawian hence his rights and humanity should not be compromised.

He adds that “all necessary legal processes and treaties including the SADC Protocol on Extradition should be carefully observed and respected.”

HRDC’s position come barely a week after some Senior chiefs and religious leaders made similar remarks, asking government against extradition Bushiri to Pretoria, South Africa to face criminal charges.

One of the pastors, Reverend Malani Mtonga said Bushiri being a Malawian was flying the country’s flag in the rainbow nation; hence, government must listen to his case.

“We understand that he [Bushiri] opened a case of extortion against some police officers and the same police officers are the ones arresting him. This matter needs to be checked where it is now. It doesn’t make sense that he has to be arrested by the same officers whom he opened a case against,” he said.

Bushiri and wife left South Africa during the first week of November  where they jumped bail  while answering fraud and money laundering charges citing security concerns and also fears of not getting a fair trial.

The South African Government last week asked Lilongwe to extradite the Bushiris to the Rainbow Nation  and  Minister of Homeland Security Richard Chimwendo Banda has signed extradition papers after being served by the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.

  1. HRDC you are the voice of the voiceless. I always give acredit on how you helped to remove DPP government.

    Please stand with our prophet Bushiri. Malawi government must demonstrate that it loves it’s citizen. If only it makes any mistake it will be a million million people going to street to demonstrate. All issues of fuel, corruption, scarcity of money, hunger, are burning in most malawians. If the government add the issue of bushiri it will just be an influence. If malawians will decide to go to the street I don’t know how many people will go. Know this Bushiri has much grace. He is loved by many, if you want you can prove it just by messing up things about extradition.

  3. These people needs to work up. Yes this guy is a Malawian but has committed a crime outside the country. Are you saying the government should defend them despite their unacceptable crimes committed outside the country? Wow

  6. Do you remember the two accountants at Blantyre Water Board who ran away to Botswana or thereabouts? Did the Malawi Government not involve Interpol to bring them back? Did HRDC ask Botswana not to rush in bringing them back? What is so special about Bushiri? Is he an angel? If he committed a crime he must go back to where he committed the crime.   10. You are becoming crazy now. Do you really know what these false prophets are after? Do they consider the rights of people when they tell them to stop taking vital medications like ARTs? Do they consider the rights of the people they steal money from? South Africans are also humans and their right were allegedly abused by Bushiri himself. Deep down his heart he and others prophets know that this is a business to they. They want to survive. HRDC should know that what the government is doing is follow the laws. What does the law say on Bushiri jumping bail?

    1. Prophet Bushiri does not stop his congregants from taking any type of medication. The question is why is Malawi gvt doing things of Bushiri in a hurry. Let’s see if SADC will vote vote for Malawi president. We don’t even see the benefit of SADC resolutions. SADC is failing to solve Zimbabwe problems. They just meet and have allowances, that’s all. Malawi can look to east if the south is treating Malawi badly. Being a poor nation is not a crime that every journalist and social media must bully Malawi, no. As long as we have God in our nation things will work for Malawi. Viva Malawi, long live Malawi, whether the devil likes it nor not.

  11. I am pretty sure the rainbow nation has indeed threatened unspecified action against Malawi. We are being blackmailed into rushing to extradite Bushiri.
    We depend and rely on South Africa too much as nation in trade fronts , we have about 1m or over of our citizens living there almost all of them illegally, do you think Government would risk it????

    1. We asked South Africa no extradite chathunya, and they agreed as per our agreements and Regional arrangements with them. What is special with someone who has skipped bail?

      1. Nothing special about him. But you should also know often times we have had fugitives other than chanthunya hiding and enjoying freedom in SA. How long did it take them to extradite chanthunya? Close to a decade. And if we are to play a fair game we need to oblige to extradite him but not under pressure or through blackmail. That’s is why hes is not any special he has to answer for his accusations however as a country we need to do it as orderly without fear of backlash.

  12. Let’s not defend the indefensible. The man jumped bail, that cannot stand in any country. It was a huge miscalculation on his part.

      1. Only the truth shall set you free. The problem is he skips that chapter in his church. Always talking about riches instead of teaching his people to be honest and truthful always like Jesus. Skipping bail is being dishonest. He must go back and answer those charges

    2. He had opened up a case against police?

    If point 2 is good for him what about their alleged victims of their fraud and his alleged rape victims? Don’t their rights also count?

    What type of human rights organisation is this? Human rights organizations world over are supposed to be nationality blind and stand 4 what’s right.

  27. Yes it is true Malawi Government must very careful never to extradite the Prophets. The world at large has plainly that allegations against the Prophets are all made up, because Prophet Burishi refused to pay them R10,000,000.00.

      Two weeks ago the cop had is alleged to have bribed to look the other way with R500k was arrested, this was reported in the media.

  29. Chanthunya was also extradited from South Africa so what’s the difference? I don’t doubt if u r not on Bushiri’s payroll now, he must go and face the music and if he’s innocent they gonna aquit him. To some of us Bushiri is no special.
