Bishop Zuza to lead Mutharika’s funeral service

Head of the Catholic Church in Malawi, Bishop Joseph Mukasa Zuza is expected to say the requiem mass for late President Bingu wa Mutharika, church sources have disclosed.

“By virtue of being Head of the Catholic Church in Malawi, Bishop Zuza is expected to lead the funeral mass for Mutharika unless otherwise,” a source said.

Bishop Zuza is the one who delivered a touching homily during national prayers for the country last year in which he said any person who thinks knows everything is the most foolish person [ chindere chakufikapo].

His homily came against the background that the late Mutharika was not listening to advice from donors, religious leaders, civil society organizations and many other stakeholders.

A few days later, Mutharika hit back at Zuza during the opening of Agriculture Trade Fare in Blantyre.

He described Bishop Zuza as some gentleman who despised him and who risked jail if it were a one party government.

Many in aid-dependent Malawi have called on Banda to restore diplomatic ties frayed by her predecessor Mutharika, who died of a heart attack on April 5, and resume suspended foreign funding that traditionally accounted for about 40 percent of the budget.
