MBC TV obsessed with Mutharika
State controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation Television is so obsessed with the late President Bingu wa Mutharika that it carried his name in the 8pm news bulletin instead of Her Excellency Joyce Banda.
One of the news bullets running down the screen as news reader Frank Kapesa read the bulletin read, “President Mutharika determined to restore the country’s economy as the country’s major donors assure her of their support.”
The bullet and the other bullets ran for about five minutes and thenthey disappeared for about one minute and resurfaced with a corrected version which read, “President Joyce Banda determined to resolve the country’s economy as the country’s major donors assure her of their support.”
Kapesa, who read the bulletin, has resurfaced from the marketing department where he hibernated after refusing to be used by Bright Malopa administration to compromise his media ethics by promoting Democratic Progressive Party agenda.
Malopa has since been fired and replaced by veteran broadcaster Dr. Benson Tembo.
The careless mistake was uncalled for considering that a number of people in the editorial team look at the news bulletin before it is on air, said one employee at MBC.
