Kachali appointed Malawi Vice President

Malawian President Joyce Banda in exercising her powers in the Constitution has appointed MP for Mzimba South West Khumbo Kachali as vice president of the republic of Malawi.

According to a statement from the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) aired on the state Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), the appointment is with immediate effect.

The statement says swearing in ceremony for the new vice president will be held on Friday at the Area 3 Mtunthama State House grounds in Lilongwe starting from 11am.

Kachali is vice president of Peoples Party (PP), a party that was formed by President Banda last year after they were both fired from the then ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of late President Bingu wa Mutharika on 12 December 2010 for undefined ‘anti-party’ activities.
Kachali, born in 1966 and a holder of Master of Science Degree in Strategic Management served as Second Vice President in the DPP from 2005 until his firing in 2010.
 In the late Mutharika administration, Kachali also served as minister in various portfolios such as Industry, Science & Technology (2004-2006), Health (2008-2009) and also Transport and Public Infrastructure (2009) until when he lost his ministerial position in August 2010.
Kachali also served as Treasurer General for the former another ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) from 2002 to 2004 when he was first elected to the National Assembly during the May 2004 general election.
