OPC says call Malawi President ‘Her Excellency Mrs Joyce Banda’
Newly elevated Malawi President Joyce Banda has officially announced that she should be addressed as ‘Her Excellency Mrs Joyce Banda’, Nyasa Times has learnt.
In a statement to the media signed by Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) Bright Msaka, the clarification has been made following numerous descriptions that people have given the first female leader of this southern African country.
People have described the new Malawi leader in different ways and with a variety of salutations at all her most recent functions.
Banda was elevated into the highest office of the land on April 7, 2012 after the sudden demise of President Bingu Wa Mutharika.
He died on the April 5 after a cardiac arrest.
Before Mutharika’s death, Banda was the country’s Vice President and the Malawi Constitution favoured her to assume the highest office in the land after the demise.
Following her ascendance into power, Banda has won overwhelming support from Malawians of all walks of life including the international donor community.
Her Excellency Banda has come on the scene at a time when Malawians had lost hope after the country’s economy noise dived in the last two years of late President Mutharika.
She has restored hope amongst Malawians which was a nation that was in clear despair after the international community abandoned the country due to the autocratic path that the country had taken under former leader, Mutharika.
Meanwhile under President Banda, the aid tap seems to have been opened with commitment from Malawi’s traditional donors to start assisting the country in various ways.
Malawi’s economy is agriculture based but a larger percentage of the national budget is supported by foreign donors.
