Parley committee against increase in electricity tariff
The Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources and Climate Change has said it will not accept implementation of the application by Power Market Limited (PML) and Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) to increase electricity tariff by 99% in the next four years.

The two companies filed the application to Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) arguing that the proposal has been necessitated by the increase in the Electricity Generation Company (Egenco) power plant tariffs to be cost reflective.
Chairperson of the committee, Werani Chilenga, said Malawians are already finding it hard to buy electricity at the current tariff.
“Nobody can accept that. It’s difficult to understand what Escom is doing with the money it gets. They have been given money to restore Kapichira Hydro Power Station. They are in debts with Egenco. We cannot accept that,” remarked Chilenga.
Escom Chief Executive Officer, Kamkwamba Kumwenda, recently told the local media in Blantyre that Escom buys electricity at K140 per Kilowatt per hour and sells at K104 per Kilowatt per hour.
How come you allowed egenco to increase the tarrifs and denying escom, this is total rubbish
Escom Management need to be overhauled, These blackouts are Man made so that Tonse Alliance should be seen as failure. How can a country always be in blackouts?? for sure?? Can investors come to Malawi? Does our leaders know that people are complaining bitterly about Escom??? Why do Escom want to increase tariff when they dont have Power to sell on the market?? Shame on you 😕
Bravo Hon. Chilenga for that bold step. It does not make any sense for escom to buy from egenco at K140 and sell the same to consumers at K104. What type of management is this? And the calibre of its marketing manager is absolutely questionable unless he was bulldozed by the so called incompetent management. In conclusion I would say if anything the CEO and management should immediately be dismissed including its board because this is total drama. Were they doing business or phada?
Malawian do no want to pay for anything, therefore please give them free
