UDF postpones elective convention to unknown date, citing ‘further preparations’

The United Democratic Front (UDF) has indefinitely shifted its much anticipated 2024 national elective conference, which it had scheduled for 3rd August at COMESA Hall in Blantyre.

UDF, one of the oldest pioneers of multiparty democracy in Malawi and former ruling party, has cited further “critical preparatory procedures” as the basis for its decision.

In a brief notice to its members, stakeholders and the general public, the party says the decision was arrived at during an “extraordinary seating” of the National Executive Committee.

“The committee considered it ideal, and in the best interest of democratic values, to shift the conference in order to expedite critical preparatory procedures to deliver a conference that meets the expectations and emancipations of our distinguished members and numerous stakeholders,” reads the statement signed by Yusuf Mwawa, National Publicity Secretary.

“We earnestly send our apologies to all directly or indirectly affected for any inconvenience such shift may have caused. We commit that all the necessary preparations remain at advanced stage, and that a new date for the National Conference, will be announced in due course,” the notice says.

UDF had called for the conference under the theme: “Towards Unity, Renewal and socio-economic transformation”.

The announcement of the convention had raised excitement and great expectation amongst the party’s supporters, members and officials ahead of Malawi’s September 2025 general elections.
