Malawi anti-graft body chief Nampota fired

Malawi government has fired the head of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Alex Nampota and President Joyce Banda is expected to appoint new boss to be confirmed by Parliament.

Nampota was told of his dismissal on Thursday 17 May 2012 and next day proceeded to Zambia for official business.

He confirmed that Chief Secretary to the Office of President and Cabinet, Bright Msaka, has informed him through a letter that his services are untenable at the graft-busting body.

“Indeed I received a letter terminating my contract,” Nampota confirmed to Nyasa Times.

He however s faulted the manner in which government terminated his services, saying they didn’t follow “the right procedure”.

Nampota was accused by critics for only being effective in investigating matters concerning opponents of late Mutharika but shielding his loyalists.

Nampota: Fired

He defended himself saying: “Fighting corruption is getting to the bottom of the truth about the allegations. We should not be getting allegations as if they are crimes.”

Nampota confirmed that he commenced investigations on former minister Patricia Kaliati on allegations that she received bribes from a United Arab Emirates consortium as an inducement to awarding it the Nyika-Vwaza Eco-tourism Concession.

Kaliati was named to have received bribes when she was Information and Tourism Minister from a United Arab Emirates consortium as an enticement to award it the Eco-tourism Concession.

She was also been named in receiving bribes from Access Communications Limited to award them a license as the second fixed line telephony operator in disregard to a legal opinion made by former  Attorney General Hon. Dr. Jane Ansah against the award.

She was also named in corruption scandal involving getting girls to government secondary schools when they are not selected.

But Nampota refused to shed light on the progress of the investigations.

Nampota shielded former foreign affairs minister Peter Mutharika and others implicated in housing scam but said it is not possible for the bureau to shield anybody from prosecution and described corruption as a “social evil”.
