Saudi Fund Set to Finance K90 Billion Malawi Infrastructure Projects Including Blantyre Hospital and Mangochi Road
A high-level delegation from the Saudi Fund for Development is in Malawi on a major fact-finding mission aimed at paving the way for financing key national infrastructure projects, including the long-awaited Blantyre District Hospital and the Mangochi-Makanjira Road.
Government says the projects are expected to begin in the 2026/27 financial year as part of broader efforts to improve public service delivery and stimulate economic growth.
Speaking to journalists at Capital Hill in Lilongwe, Senior Loan Operations Expert for Africa at the Saudi Fund for Development, Ahmed Almaghyuli, said the fund has already expressed commitment towards financing the two strategic projects. He said the delegation has also asked the Malawi Government to provide its national development plan so the fund can identify additional sectors requiring urgent support and investment.
The proposed Blantyre District Hospital is expected to become one of the most significant health infrastructure projects in the country in recent years. Head of Infrastructure Development in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Sanderson Kuyeli, revealed that the process of identifying a contractor to design the hospital is already underway.
He said the modern health facility is projected to cost about 32 million US dollars, equivalent to approximately K55.7 billion, and is expected to ease pressure on existing referral hospitals in the Southern Region once completed.
Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamveka said the Saudi delegation’s visit follows his engagements with Gulf nations last year, including Qatar and Kuwait, where he lobbied for financial assistance towards Malawi’s priority development areas.
Mwanamveka said the discussions focused on interventions aimed at stabilising the economy, particularly in critical sectors such as fuel supply, fertilizer availability and foreign exchange shortages. He disclosed that the Saudi Fund has already committed 20 million US dollars — about K34.7 billion — towards the construction of the Blantyre District Hospital.
The Ministry of Health says once construction begins, the hospital is expected to be completed within two years, a development authorities believe could transform healthcare access for thousands of people in Blantyre and surrounding districts while also creating employment and boosting economic activity during the construction phase.
