Chiccu clothing line tipped to gain Malawi following

Malawi fashion designer Chiku Gondwe is getting big following in her clothing brand which was launched recently in Blantyre.

Chiku, who also owns L’Afric Tailoring Limited with her husband Frank, unveiled her Chiccu clothing line at  CFAO car showroom and  installed  17-year old  model Rejoice Namale, a student of  St Patrick’s Academy, as the label brand ambassador.

“We are a luxury Clothing label that focuses on Classic, Ethnic & Contemporary pieces ,” said Gondwe .

“I design clothes that celebrate the beauty of creation. Our garments are inspired by the African & Victorian historical fashion and reflect energy & Eternity,” Gondwe said.

The clothing company  is in the commercial city Blantyre.

“Our design signature is the use of high quality Malawian Chitenje blended with Exquisite Silks & Cashmere fabrics with glorious details such as African beading techniques, sequins and high end embroidery.”

The designer says Chiccu clothing targets women, men and kid’s “that are proud of their heritage and are not afraid to show it off, are free spirited, confident yet playful.”

“We give attention to detail in our clothes. We do a lot of art work. We are targeting the people who are willing to pay something to look great.”

For quite a long time, the Malawian clothing market has been saturated with foreign (unused and second hand) clothes from western, Asian and African countries such as South Africa and Tanzania, just to mention a few.

The second-hand market (kaunjika) remains a predominant source of clothing,  but  middle class  always look for high quality Malawian fashion.
