Temwa and Tabitha Chawinga named in Africa’s top Wafcon XI
Malawian football sensations Temwa and Tabitha Chawinga have been named in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) Team of the Tournament – an extraordinary sibling double that has capped off a remarkable few weeks for the sisters and their country.

Temwa, the star striker who has long been tipped as one of Africa’s finest talents, sealed the tournament’s Golden Boot award after finding the net five times and setting up a further two goals for her teammates.
Not to be outdone, her sister Tabitha also enjoyed a stellar campaign in front of goal, netting four times herself as the pair terrorised opposition defences throughout the competition.
Together, the Chawinga sisters were instrumental in guiding Malawi to the Wafcon semi-finals – a historic run that also secured the nation’s maiden qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, a milestone that will live long in Malawian football history.
Their inclusion in the star-studded best eleven places them alongside some of the continent’s most electrifying talents, including Zambia’s prolific forward Barbra Banda, who also earned a spot in the Team of the Tournament.
Banda’s selection means three players from the Cosafa region have now been recognised among the tournament’s elite, underlining the growing strength of southern African football on the continental stage – and cementing the Chawinga sisters’ status as household names well beyond Malawi’s borders.
