First Lady  Gertrude Mutharika has heaped praise on Malawi’s history-making Scorchers, telling the women’s national football team they have put the country firmly on the map following their remarkable run at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon).

First Lady hails Scorchers’ ‘historic’ Wafcon achievement

Speaking at a lavish luncheon held in the team’s honour at Kamuzu Palace, the First Lady said she was overflowing with pride, insisting the Scorchers’ success had brought ‘immense joy’ and a wave of national pride sweeping across Malawi.

She revealed that anticipation for the team’s return had been building for days, with excited citizens counting down the hours until they could finally welcome their heroes home and celebrate the historic milestone together.

In an emotional address, the First Lady declared that the Scorchers had etched their names permanently into Malawi’s history books, calling their achievement a rare unifying moment that had brought the entire nation together as one.

But it was her next announcement that truly stole the show – revealing that President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has personally gifted a staggering K5 million to EACH member of the squad, as a token of appreciation for their hard work and outstanding dedication throughout the tournament.

The eye-watering cash gift is expected to provide a life-changing boost for many of the players, and comes on top of the widespread adulation the squad has received since their return – underscoring just how deeply their Wafcon heroics have resonated across the country.
