Malawi’s Scorchers receive K5m presidential gift after Wafcon run

First Lady  Gertrude Mutharika has heaped praise on Malawi’s history-making Scorchers, telling the women’s national football team they have put the country firmly on the map following their remarkable run at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon).

Speaking at a lavish luncheon held in the team’s honour at Kamuzu Palace, the First Lady said she was overflowing with pride, insisting the Scorchers’ success had brought ‘immense joy’ and a wave of national pride sweeping across Malawi.
