DPP fails to block Malawi rights report in House
Former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) MPs on Tuesday ganged up in parliament in an attempt to block tabling of a report on July 20 anti- DPP government protests released recently by Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC).
The report among other institutions faults the police for using excessive force and live bullets which regrettably led to 18 innocent people being shot in cold blood.
When Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Ralph Kasambara, took to the floor to table the report, DPP MPs objected arguing that such a report was not allowed under parliamentary standing orders to be tabled in the house.
However, first deputy Speaker Jones Chingola ruled in favour of government MPs who argued otherwise.
In his contribution MCP MP Alekeni Menyani said the killings during the protests were a clear testimony of dictatorial tendencies of the DPP regime.
” The DPP proved to the world and not Malawi alone of what a dictator they had for a leader [Bingu wa Mutharika,” Menyani told parliament.
However, most DPP MPs led by its leader George Chaponda shifted blame to civil society and vendors for escalating the situation.
