MP Sosten Gwengwe joins DPP
Member of Parliament for Dedza Central Sosten Gwengwe, who resigned from opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) , announced Wednesday August 31 that he was joined the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Gwengwe announced at the party’s offices in the capital Lilongwe, he resigned from MCP in May because the party and its leadership has nothing to offer to the country.
He says he has joined the DPP because President Bingu wa Mutharika has demonstrated “a clear vision of developing the country.”
Gwengwe served as the MCP spokesperson on finance in the National Assembly but resigned citing differences with party president John Tembo.
DPP secretary general Wakuda Kamanga said Gwengwe’s move proved that the ruling party was still popular, contrary to what critics have been saying.
But Tembo questioned the wisdom of Gwengwe joining the DPP when the government is facing huge challenges and criticisms over human rights abuses and governance issues.
Speculations are high that Gwengwe was lured with a deputy ministerial position at Finance.
