Malawians in US down to Liberia on Independence Day, Maupo featured
Former Malawi national team defender Maupo Msowoya reminded people of his past skills when he was featured in the Malawi squad in United States which played Liberia in an Independence Anniversary Celebrations social match played at South Bend Indiana on Saturday.
Maupo partnered with other veteran players like Austin Joyo and George Banda in a match Malawi lost 1-2 to Liberians from Springfield IL, played at Edison soccer fields.
Malawi’s soccer legend Mphatso Namwali stayed out of the game due to an injury.
The Malawi squad played scintillating football especially with energetic legs of youthful Andy Mmadi, Steve Mmadi, Aubrey Joyo, Michel Moyo and Wankie but missed a lot of scoring opportunities
Maupo nearly put Malawi in the lead with a very powerful volley at the 20th minute which went over the bar.
The two sides were equal with no goals at half time.
In the second half, Liberia opened the scores and Malawi equalised through a header by Andy Mmadi five minutes later.
Liberia squad left it late to score their winning goal.
But both teams at the end celebrated together the Malawi Independence Day.
