Malawi leader JB, UN chief hold talks in New York

Malawian President Mrs. Joyce Banda on Sunday, September 23, 2012 held a bilateral meeting with Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) at the UN Headquarters in New York, USA.

President Banda is in New York to attend the 67th Session of the UN General Assembly. The Secretary General will officially open the General Assembly session on Tuesday, September 25, 2012.

President Banda is expected to present her maiden address to the General Assembly as Head of State, the following day.

Details of the meeting between President Banda and Ba Ki-moon were not immediately available.

“It was a closed door meeting; I am sure the details of the leaders’ discussions will be made available in due course,” said Tusekele Mwanyongo, President Banda’s press aide, in an interview.

Whilst in New York, the President is meeting various people and organizations to cement ties with the international community for their continued support of Malawi, to help ordinary Malawians deal with the current economic challenges and put Malawi back on the path to economic growth.

“Her Excellency is meeting global leaders in business, philanthropy and governments and Malawian Diaspora to attract investment into Malawi,” Mwanyongo told Nyasa Times.

He also confirmed that President Banda will hold talks withMary Robinson, former Prime Minister of Ireland on Monday, September 24.

The President will also have bilateral talks with Julia Gillard, Prime Minister of Australia and US Secretary of State Hilary Rodham Clinton later in the week, according to  the press aide.
