Civo fans bay for coach Masanjala’s head

Civo United veteran coach ‘Sir’ Alex Masanjala had a shock of his coaching career on Sunday, September 30, 2012, when disgruntled Civo fans bayed for his head after the team’s embarrassing 4-1 loss to Silver Strikers in a Standard Bank Cup semi final.

After the game at Silver Stadium, a group of Civo fans gathered at the stadium’s main entrance to express their dissatisfaction with the team’s performance.

As Masanjala came out of the dressing room, the fans started chanting: Achoke, Achoke, Achoke. They charged at the coach, preventing him from boarding a vehicle belonging to one of the club’s officials.

Armed Police Mobile Service (PMS) officers quickly intervened and surrounded the coach before leading him to a riot police vehicle, which drove him off the stadium under heavy  escort.

There has been discomfort amongst Civo fans and officials over the team’s recent poor form, which has seen the government sponsored side failing to chalk a win in five league and cup games.

The team only marched to the Standard Bank Cup semi finals courtesy of the away goal rule after drawing 1-1 (away) and 0-0 (Home) against Moyale Barracks.

Unconfirmed reports indicate the coach was given three games by the club’s executive board to prove his worth and is remaining with just one game, having drawn 0-0 against Moyale and lost miserably against Silver in Sunday’s semi final.
