Malawi to host Sadc legislative meeting

Malawi will host the Sadc Parliamentary Forum (South African Development Community Parliamentary Forum) from 9 to October 19 2012 in the lakeshore district of Mangochi.

Malawi acting Clerk of Parliament, Henry Njolomole, confirmed the meeting of the regional organisation of representatives from national parliaments of African nations who seek to promotemultiparty democracy, and good governance will take place in Malawi.

“Malawi will, therefore, host the 32nd Plenary Assembly under the theme “Enhancing the role of Parliament in Budget Oversight and Economic Governance in SADC countries

“Theme is relevant as most democratic constitutions require appropriations and taxation measures to be approved by parliament in addition to ensuring that revenue and expenditure measures are implemented properly and efficiently in order to enhance good economic governance,”Njolomole said in a statement dated October 1.

The forum has representatives from national parliaments of; Malawi, Angola, Botswana,Lesotho, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabweis advancing, made up the Speaker and five members of parliament from each member state.

The Plenary Assembly, which meets twice a year in one of the member states on a rotational basis, advises the SADC Summit on matters of regional policy issues and promotes the objectives and programs of SADC

The body’s other objectives are to promote gender equality, human rights and fundamental freedoms, while the fight against HIV/AIDS is top of its agenda.
