Malawi’s southern region residents brace for water woes
Tap water users in Malawi’s southern region are bracing for another acute water shortage due to tap water disconnection campaign which the southern region water board is starting on Monday.
In a statement, the board’s authorities say the campaign targets those who have outstanding bills.
The development comes as the resident continues experiencing water shortage due to no or low water pressure.
For example residents from Malawi’s commercial capital Blantyre have for the past three consecutive months experiencing erratic water shortage a situation which water authorities attributed to failure by the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi’s persistent blackouts which they say affects their water pumping system.
However residents told Nyasa Times that it would be unfair for the water authorities to start disconnecting few taps that supply them with water while they [water board authorities] fail to provide the residents with adequate water supply.
“We are waking up 2 a.m walking long distances fetching water from few taps that are able to supply water. So closing them is inhuman and tantamount to killing people. After all they should first rectify the problem of low water pressure before them starting this evil exercise,” says a member of Water Users Association in Ndirande township .
The water users say despite the establishment of the association which was aimed to arrest problem of water shortage water board officials have been a great disappointment to them because they fail to provide water to the residents.
They are expressing fear of contract the water borne diseases especially during this rainy season as most of them would resort to using untreated water from wells if the status quo remains unchanged.
