Zomba young politicians in sanitation work at central hospital

Young Politicians Union (YPU) this week united by coming together to clean the surroundings of guardians’ shelter at the Zomba Central Hospital (ZCH).

According to YPU’s director Isaac Masanga, the young politicians decided to take the responsibility after noticing that the guardians’ shelter at the Eastern Region’s referral health facility has been
operating without piped water and toilets a couple of months ago.

Said Masanga: “We want to maintain the guardians’ shelter by starting with sanitation works which left a lot to be desired at Zomba Central Hospital. These guardians’ come with patients from various districts in the Eastern Region and they are exposed to hazardous health with such poor sanitation.

“So, as young politicians from MCP, UDF, DPP, PP, PPM and others, we deicded to come and assist in maintaining the premises. As you can see the grass was tall, guardians’ are helping themselves in the
surrounding maize gardens and worse still, water was disconnected long ago due to a huge bill.”

Speaking in an interview, ZCH principal administrator Fredson Kambeni said the poor sanitation at the guardians’ shelter is as a result of communication breakdown between the health facility and Zomba City Council.

“The guardians’ shelter is in such a poor state because there was a misunderstanding between us and Zomba City Council on who is responsible for maintenance. But we have discussed the issue with them and we are optimistic that water will be connected shortly and the toilets will start functioning,” he said.

On his part, city council acting head of engineering Ian Dolozi attributed the development to a huge water bill which a contractor for a new toilet for the guardians’ shelter had left before commissioning.

Meanwhile, water at the shelter has since been re-connected.
