Journalist Pamela Mlogeni assaulted, paralysed
Channel Africa correspondent in Malawi, Pamela Mlogeni was last month brutally assaulted and left for dead by unknown assailants who broke into her Ndirande New Lines home in Blantyre.
Mlogeni, who sustained several deep cuts on her head and face said in an interview on Wednesday she neither recalled the number of her attackers nor recognized them.
“I can’t even remember what exactly happened because I lost consciousness. All I know is that after arriving home at around 7 pm on 20th December, I had dinner with my daughter and niece thereafter we retired to bed.”
After the attack, she was admitted at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) where a five-hour surgery had to be done to stitch her wounds up.
She was discharged last week but still goes to the hospital for physiotherapy to help her walk again after her right leg and arm were paralysed during the attack.
Pamela’s sister, Dzeliwe Mlogeni said a man who had gone to Pamela’s house to mend a fence discovered Pamela on the morning following the attack.
“He told us that Pamela was making sounds from within the house whose door was open and when he peered inside, he saw her lying in a pool of blood.
“There was a huge rock in the house which was the weapon the assailants used and there was blood all over the house,” Dzeliwe said.
She reported that two windowpanes had been removed and they suspect that one of the assailants used that to gain entry into the house to open the kitchen window to let in his accomplices.
The family has no idea who might be behind the attacks or the motive but ruled out burglary because Pamela’s mobile phone was the only stolen item.
Police public relations officer, Elizabeth Divala said the police were yet to get a statement from Pamela because they were unable to do so because of her previous serious condition.
“Her mother, Agnes Mlogeni gave a statement on her behalf when she came to report the crime. She suspected her daughter was attacked by one person,” said Divala.
Meanwhile, police investigations are continuing.
