Malawi gov’t facilitates deportation of its own diplomat in South Africa
A Malawian diplomat to South Africa Emmie Mkangama had a rude awakening on Tuesday morning when officials from Home Affairs from South Africa accompanied by Malawi Police officers stormed her residence forcing her to return back to Malawi.
Reports indicate that the move purportedly being facilitated by the Malawi government authorities follows her defiance to a recall issued on her several times.
Mkangama who was the First Secretary at the Malawi’s embassy in South Africa said the security officials told her that she was being deported. But she dismissed reports that she declined the recall, saying she was just waiting to have her dues paid first.
“In fact I obtained an injunction on the matter and I wonder that my government has gone to the extent of facilitating my deportation,” she told Zodiak Broadcasting station.
Malawi government authorities have however denied having a hand in the deportation with Attorney General Anthony Kamanga saying: “the immigration status of Malawians in South Africa is not determined by the Malawi government” before he distanced the matter from his office.
Political commentators are however blaming Mkangama and other diplomatic because of their delays to leave the embassy after the expiry of their contracts.
Mkangama was among those who were assigned to the embassy during the reign of late President Bingu wa Mutharika who was succeeded by his Vice President Joyce Banda.
