Parliament deny MPs pay rise: Accuses Nation newspaper of fabrication
Malawi National Assembly has denied reports that gross package of Members of Parliament has doubled from K724, 114 K1.2 million a month while the loan facility has more than tripled from K7 million.
Clerk of Parliament Roosevelt Gondwe said a report which appeared in the Weekend Nation newspaper indicating a 100 percent increase has pushed the total wage bill for the 193 Parliamentarians to K270 million a month, K3.2 billion a year and K16.2 million at the end of their five-year term of office, is unfounded.
“It is not true that there has been salary increment,” said Gondwe.
He suggested the story may have been fabricated by the newspaper journalist.
Gondwe said there has been no plot for salary increment for the MPs but admitted there are proposed changes in their emoluments.
Leader of government Francis Kasaila declined to comment on the issue but said that MPs are not getting any salary increment.
Hard-pressed tax payers and commentators reacted furiously on Facebook and Twitter over the news that MPs are to be handed inflation-busting pay rise.
