Malawi musician Alfazema arrested in Dubai for littering, pays fine

Malawi’s once-famous musician Joseph Alfazema has been released  by the police in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, after paying a fine as he was arrested  for littering in the public.

Alfazema who quit his singing career, at least for now, for a job as an unskilled labourer Dubai  is among tens of thousands of Malawians under employment scheme launched by former president Joyce Banda to beat joblessness in Malawi suffering over 50% unemployment.

He has been in the United Arab Emirates since October last year.

According to published repors, Alfazema was travelling in a commuter from Al Aweer to Deira, before a policeman nabbed him  because he was seen chewing bubblegum and littering in the public as the bus was passing Sonapur.

Alfazema, famous for the hit Tilibe Chonena confirmed that he was handcuffed and charged before paying a fine of 200 UAE Dirham (K25 000).

“It is true that I was arrested. As you know, I am not familiar with the laws here as I have been here for three months now. I was arrested for chewing and littering in public. But I paid the fine after they detained me,” said Alfazema as quoted by The Nation  newspaper of Malawi on Monday.

“In Malawi, we are used to chewing in public with no consequence. This has made me to start consulting on the laws here so that I am fully acquainted with how it works,” he said.

Alfazema is working for a company involved in the production of concrete blocks and tiles as a plant operator and controls water levels in concrete making machines of the company.

His career has hit the skids due his lack of recording equipment and funds to produce DVDs for sale. He last recorded a video four years ago.

  7. Common sense is not common!
    In terms of public hygiene, we do a lot of things in Malawi that are in no way OK and it’s plain stupid to think of even attempting the same else where. It does no good to our reputation as Malawians. And on a serious note, Malawi now has a lot of intelligent and competitive college graduates at different levels who are strugglling to secure employment. I think government should highly prioritize those individuals when seeking these employment deals with other countries. Exporting unskilled labor seems full of drama, counterproductive and quite unfair for the young professionals.

  16. In Malawi there is no law that allows us to litter anyhow, but is the lack of foresight among our leaders to make sure that bins are available in most public places. This forces people to litter anyhow. However, this could not make one Alfazema that the laxity prevalent in Malawi is the same case elsewhere

If they are attacking BEAM which is trying at its best to put Malawi Clean what else do we expect? I work with a hospital and I know dirty Malawi is. One day we just hearing him crying Iyayi yemweyo of kudabwa the the other day the radio played the same truck we heard him singing along Iyayi. Yatha pa radio amvekere Iyayo emweyo ili radio you can’t repeat it. That’s how great your music was sinanga vita kuti simunachite nazo phindu but we lost the talent.
