Winiko threatens to bewitch Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust

Concerned citizens in Mulanje district led by renowned comedian and politician Bon ‘Winiko’ Kalindo, who is also member of Parliament for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have renewed their call for Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust(MMCT) to move out of Mulanje.

MMCT’s activities have been blamed for degrading the beautiful and one of the biggest mountains in Africa, Mulanje Mountain.

Speaking in an interview with Nyasa Times in Lilongwe, said MMCT must leave or face being bewitched to leave.

Kalindo argued that they felt cheated since the issue started as government has not shown any interest to resolve the feud between MMCT and Mulanje citizens, or come to the rescue of Mulanje Mountain, which is said to have lost its beauty due to MMCT activities.

“Mulanje Mountain is no longer a tourist attraction as it used to be because of rampant cutting down of trees by some ill-minded MMCT officials who are doing timber business instead of them be on the fore front to protect Mulanje Mountain from destruction.

“These people are degrading our mountain,” said Kalindo.

Kalindo warned that should MMCT insist working on the mountain as concerned citizens they will have no option but to bewitch them.

“We can be poor yes but we can find other means of dealing with these people this is by bewitching them so that we can force them out of the place,” said Kalindo.

In March last year, the concerned citizens petitioned Government through Mulanje District Commissioner to force MMCT leave Mulanje into the hands of local people within 14 days.

  12. This man, Bon Winiko Kalindo is a clever thief. Whenever he’s vocal on the radio and press his boys from Likhubula are busy smuggling wood from the mountain and make timber others busy in charcoal burning. Just get to Mbewa villages, around Likhubula, his boys are busy burning charcoal. And also just at the Likhubula bridge, the chairman of Winiko’s group is busy pit-sawing the smuggled woods from the mountain. Later on they meet and share the proceeds. Just get to these places now you’ll see with your eyes that the group has taken control of the mountain and are cultivating the forest products illegally to finance their group. Otherwise Winiko and his members from Likhubula are benefiting from the Mulanje mountain through smuggling logs of trees while making noises on the radios in order to look innocents!

    If you indeed are capable of bewitching people you should first of all test your charm with Thindwa of Secular Humanism. My understanding is that those who have the skills to bewitch can do so in a clandestine manner. Please! Stop fooling people that Mulanje is the hub of witchcraft in Malawi.   65. Winiko may not have the acumen on how to manage conflict but he has a point. Those entrusted to protect the forest are the same people in the fore front destroying it. We have seen it in Chikangawa. The once dense forest it’s now a semi-desert. It is also happening in Dzalanyama forest, Thuma forest etc. That kind of scenario where a policeman is supposed to protect the public is in the fore front in acts of armed robbery.     As a leader MP you are in a better position to talk to the government and sort things out. Remember , ” Woyenda ndi lupanga adzafa ndi lupanga lake lomwero.” Imagine MMCT is a big company composed of many people. It is not just one person. You think in that group all the people know nothing. Open your eyes and see.

    It will be an endless battle. In short, ” The outbreak of the third world war.” Many people will be involved. It is not what you see now but rather the effects of your action after bewitching them will judge you. Be like an honourable and talk things like one.

There will be an extinct of trees and wild game if there will be no conservation control and Kalindo does not bring any alternative option to control this.There is illegal cutting of trees for making charcoal and if these people are left free as Kalindo wants, then he is the one to be bewitched in order to resolve this problem. Long before in the Government of Kamuzu, the Department of Forrestry ensured the mountains were conserved through Forrest Rangers. All these good days went with UDF and now DPP. Shame on you Kalindo.
