Malawi Police arrest mother for concealing birth
A mother of seven is in Police custody at Ulongwe Police Unit in Malawi’s eastern district of Balaka for allegedly concealing the birth of the child.
Police says the suspect Daliya Alick aged 32, gave birth to a baby boy on Tuesday this week and then dumped the baby in a pit latrine.
Balaka Police Spokeserson Sub-Inspector Joseph Sauka says after the incident, the suspect continued staying as if nothing has happened until members of the community suspected foul play after seeing that she was not pregnant but with no baby.
“They then tipped the Police who arrested the suspect and upon interview, the suspect confessed to have dumped the baby into a pit latrine a development that forced the Police to demolish the pit latrine; but the baby was found already dead,” said Sauka.
Sauka says the suspect said she has seven children which she is failing to take care and could not manage to take care of that child alone because his father denied responsibility and escaped from the area.
Meanwhile, the suspect is in Police custody and is expected to appear before court soon where she will answer a case of concealing death which is contrary to section 232 of the Penal code.
Daliya Alick comes from Mdenga village, Traditional Authority Amidu in the same district of Balaka.
In a related development, Sauka says a year old child has died in Balaka district after he drowned in a bucket of water.
According to the mother of the deceased Chrissy Tambula 25, the child met his fate when he was left alone at home after she went to answer a call of nature.
“When the mother returned, she was surprised to see her 15-months old son in a bucket of water which was not full at all. She then removed the child from the bucket while crying for help but unfortunately he was already dead,” he says.
Postmortem conducted at Balaka District Hospital revealed that death was due to suffocation.
The deceased was coming from Kambadya village, Traditional Authority Nkaya in Balaka district.
Meanwhile Police in district is appealing to general public to pay more attention to their children and that children should not be left alone close to uncovered buckets of water.
