Zomba Mayor election ends in a tie, re-run in August
An election on the new Mayor for Zomba City ended in a tie on Tuesday between Peoples Party Councilor for Mpira Ward, Christopher Jana and Democratic Progressive Party’s Fadwick Lipenga of Ntiya Ward.
They got four votes each and third contestant, DPP’s Councilor for Masongola Ward, James Mlekere got just one vote.
The situation has forced authorities to call for a rerun so that a replacement for late Joana Ntaba who succumbed to Malaria early March is found.
In an interview after the elections, Acting Chief Executive Officer for Zomba City Mussa Mwale described the impending rerun as a sign of matured democracy.
He said members had agreed to open the rerun to all councilors.
According to Mwale, the rerun will be held in August when the council will have a Full Meeting.
Deputy Mayor for the City councilor Davie Maunde declared that he would not be contesting for the hot seat.
