Malawi singer Joe Gwaladi arrested for sexual assault on girl, 14

Popular street-performer, Joe Gwaladi has been arrested for an alleged sexual assual on a 14-year-old girl in Phalombe district, police have confirmed.

Phalombe police Public Relations Officer, Augustus Nkhwazi confirmed that they were keeping in custody the Ndikanaziwa and Tumbocid hits maker.

”He was arrested yesterday [Wednesday]. Meanwhile he is still in custody. He is alleged to have defiled a 14 years old girl,” said Nkhwazi.

It is reported that Gwaladi took advantage of the girl as she was taking a bath.

The girl according to information Nyasa Times has sourced, is a friend to Gwaladi’s wife.

Gwaladi will be charged with Defilement under Section 138 (1) of the Penal Code.

According to Section 138 (1), Defilement attracts a maximum punishment of death or life imprisonment.

Gwaladi, who has been playing music using home-made instruments since childhood, rose to fame in 2005 with his hit song Khoswe Wandilaura and has been a phenomenal ever since .

His music is characterized by powerful lyrics effortlessly combined with traditional and more modern, urban sounds. Gwaladi talks about AIDS, poverty and many other social issues affecting Malawians.

Joe Gwaladi is famous for songs like Ndinafa Bulu, Nkhope Ya Chilembwe, and Zakanika.

He once revealed to have formed a band called “Kupata Kwa Ana”.
