ACB arrest police officer for soliciting K100, 000 bribe

The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested a police officer from Blantyre Police Station for soliciting K100, 000 from homicide suspects in order for them to be released on bail.

The arrest follows a receipt of the bureaus complaint in 2008 which alleged that police officer, Depress Andrew Chikalipo, solicited K100, 000 but received K10, 000 from Elton Chatepa in order to release Elton, Dyson and Madalitso Chatepa on police bail.

“ACB investigated the matter and established that the allegation was true and the bureau arrested the officer on August 10, 2012.

“He was taken to Blantyre Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with two counts of corrupt practices by a public officer contrary to Section 24 (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act and one count of abuse of office contrary to Section 25B (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act,” read a statement signed by the bureaus senior public relations officer, Egrita Ndala.
