ADRA Malawi donates items to support the fight against cholera
The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (Adra) Malawi has donated assorted items to Tsabango Health Centre in Lilongwe due to a cholera outbreak that has hit the area.
ADRA Malawi Regional Administrator, Dyson Mbengo said they saw the need to make the donation because they work in the communities that have been affected, Tsabango being one of them.
He said the donation has been made by ADRA Denmark through ADRA Malawi specifically to Tsabango because they received a plea that it was one of the centres that was indicated to be in need of the materials donated.
“The donation made today will save lives of those that have been already affected but also protect those that are involved day in, day out in taking care of the patients.
He said they saw a great need of rendering assistance so that it helps stabilize the situation in all the affected areas and hoped that the battle would be worn and would soon be history.
“Cholera has affected our operations too and so we will make sure that we help as much as we can wherever possible so that we win this battle together,” said Mbengo.
Receiving the donation Tuesday afternoon, District Commissioner for Lilongwe, Lawford Palani said cholera continues to attack a lot of areas even though much effort is being pumped in every day.
He said this is why they made a plea to several organizations to come forward and help because the centres continue to run out of materials they use in treating the patients and that, that needed well-wishers to support government in realizing materials to use in the fight against the disease.
“We got reports from the District Health Office that there were running out of materials to use in our cholera rehabilitation centers and that prompted us to continue calling for assistance from organizations and stakeholders to come and assist.
“I am so happy today to have received all these materials from ADRA Malawi to be dispensed to Tsabango Health Centre to save lives as health staffs have committed themselves to make sure that this disease doesn’t spread further,” said Palani.
He said both Lilongwe City and District have been affected and need enough materials and support from both government and non- governmental organizations so that the disease doesn’t claim lives as it has been the case the past weeks.
Palani said the council has its technical working group that has done and continues to do a tremendous job and hoped that other stakeholders would continue to support until Malawi is declared a free cholera zone.
“Let me commend those that have come forward complimenting what government is doing in the fight against cholera. We receive a lot of calls from well- wishers willing to join hands in the fight against cholera and let me urge them not to get tired until we combat the disease,” he said.
District Health Officer for Lilongwe, Dr James Mbewe thanked ADRA Malawi for the donation saying it will help a lot at the center.
He said government on its on is trying all it can but needs support and therefore commended the organization for the timely donation in the city.
According to a report from the DHO, as of Tuesday 30th January, Lilongwe had eight admissions at Bwaila with two new admissions from Chinsapo and Mchitanjiru and two discharges.
On the same note, the Ministry of Health on Tuesday called upon each household to go and receive chlorine at Mkwichi Primary School for water treatment in their homes.
