Advantages of federal system of governance in Malawi

Localized Governance

Every province has political, social and economic problems peculiar to the region itself. Provincial government representatives live in proximity to the people and are most of the time from the same community, so that they are in a better position to understand these problems and offer unique solutions for them. For example, traffic congestion Lilongwe, and Water problem in Blantyre is a problem that can be best solved by the local governments, keeping local factors in mind, rather than by somebody living in Mzuzu.federali

Local Representation

Federal System offers representation to different populations. Citizens of various provinces may have different aspirations, ethnicity and follow different cultures. The central government can sometimes overlook these differences and adopt policies which cater to the majority. This is where the regional government steps in. While formulating policies, local needs, tastes and opinions are given due consideration by the state governments. Rights of the minorities are protected too. Malawi is a culture diversed grouping.

Freedom to Form Policies

State governments have the freedom to adopt policies which may not be followed nationally or by any other state. For example,  We have diverse regions beliefs which can ideally affect governance policies. Some Districts are predominantly Muslims and other Adventist  and so forth. It is in their jurisdiction to form policies that appeal to the people in those areas.

Optimum Utilization of Resources

Division of work between the central and the regional governments leads to optimum utilization of resources. The central government can concentrate more on international affairs and defense of the country, while the provincial government can cater for the local needs. Kayekera Projects, Boxite mining, Environmental Protection like Mulanje Mountain.

Scope for Innovation and Experimentation

Federal System has room for innovation and experimentation. Two local governments can have two different approaches to bring reforms in any area of public domain, be it taxation or education. The comparison of the results of these policies can give a clear idea of which policy is better and thus, can be adopted in the future.

Federal System no doubt has many positives vis-a-vis communism or imperialism but still, some political scientists often raise questions about its advantages.

When we do the comparison their are more advantages than disadvantages. since we are failing under the current system which is unitary, i think we might as well try something new! those who say no have got selfish reasons.

Mr. Patrick Jonathan Mwale, palibe chamzeru mwakambapo apa. Reading your title I thought I would see a “Compare” and “Contrast” kind of analysis with a few case studies than this weak superficial presentation.

The lack of comments is enough vote of no confidence in your points. Please try again.

Why don’t you write your own article explaining to us the benefits of the unitary state? I have not yet seen one article on this yet. All pro unitary state advocates avoid explaining the benefits of the current system because they know that the current system has failed.

Mr Kavunga you need to understanding the title of the article. Mr Mwale has clearly said what he was going to write about in his article which is ‘advantages of FSOG’. He didnt say advantages and disadvantages.

Atumbuka nanu muzimva, there will never be federalism in Malawi as long as northern region remains part of Malawi. Federalism is a national issue requiring every Malawian to vote and you know voting is game of numbers. The fact is the south and center with baba tembo will vote against it. The North can successfully fight for secession. Malawi can easily adopt federalism after your secession. But I know the north cannot fight for secession for their selfish reasons. A parasite cannot leave its host voluntarily. Sorry I know truth hurts but we have to say it anyway.

Wishful thinking – just wait, and there will be a federation in Malawi soon whether you like it or not. Just as atumbuka started multiparty calls and it happened and so will be federation calls
