Malawi’s opposition Alliance forDemocracy (AFORD) has commended the country’s President , Her Excellency Joyce Banda for her calm decorum in the manner in which the transition was managed.
While congratulating Banda for ascending to the presidency of Malawi, the party said the president demonstrated maturity in the manner she handled herself during the transfer of power despite the situation she found herself in.
“We commend her calm decorum, sense of priority with regard to focusing on the funeral of her predecessor and the smooth management of the transition notwithstanding the difficult situation she finds herself in.
“We assure Her Excellency of our support in charting the way forward for our country in view of the daunting political, economic and social circumstances that currently define the Malawi society,” says AFORD in a media statement signed by its secretary general Khwauli Msiska.
The party however deplores the behaviour by some “few greedy politicians” members of the executive branch and the former ruling party wanted to deliberately interfere with the constitutional order for the transfer of power.
On this, AFORD says it is pleased that such machinations were nipped in the bud before causing harm and “irreparable” damage to the country’s young democracy.
“We commend tireless efforts by some fellow politicians, some noble government officials, the civil society, the clergy, including Her Excellency herself for ensuring a smooth and peaceful transfer of power.
“It is our considered view and our fervent hope that the incoming Administration shall strive to address the dire situation the people of this country now endure as a matter of urgent priority,” says the once mighty party founded by fearless freedom fighter late Thom Chakufwa Chihana.
The party says it a “willing and committed partner” within its capacity to render the required support to President Banda and her government.
