Africa Bank director general Tonia Kandiero dies: Body to be repatriated to Malawi for burial
African Development Bank (AfDB) director general for the Southern Africa Region, Dr. Tonia Kandiero, has passed on after collapsing in her office in Pretoria, South Africa on Wednesday night.
One of AfDB Malawi senior officers, Benson Nkhoma, confirmed the development saying her death was a “shock” to the AfDB family and the whole world.
Nkhoma said AfDB was still looking into what really has led to Kandiero’s death but mentioned that she had “complained” of “health issues” prior to her collapse.
According to Nkhoma, arrangements are currently being made to have her body repatriated to Malawi.
He said funeral details would be announced to the public soon but Malawi funeral vigil is in Chigumula-Blantyre.
Kandiero’s office was basically concerned with development and business delivery in the region.
She was promoted to her position in November 2016.
Before joining the Bank, DKandiero worked at the South Africa’s National Treasury, first as Director, Trade and Macroeconomic Policy and later as the Director for Global Development Policy and International Economics. At South Africa’s Treasury Department, she analysed trade issues at national, regional and multilateral levels and managed South Africa’s relationships with International Financial Institutions.
Kandiero held a Bachelors degree in business administration from Morehead State University, USA (1993) and a Master’s degree (1997) and PhD (2001) in economics, respectively, from Howard University, USA
