Airtel Malawi unveils new CEO: Heiko Schlittle

Airtel Malawi on Wednesday introduced a new Managing Director Heiko Schlittke replacing Saulos Chilima who recently joined politics and is now Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) running mate for May 20, elections.

Before joining Airtel Malawi, Schlittke has been in the telecommunication industry for 20 years in several African nations. He has been Managing Director for Airtel in Madagascar where he is coming from and other countries like Ghana, Tanzania, Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso.

Speaking to journalists in the capital Lilongwe, he said, he was happy to be in Malawi and is committed to accelerate Airtel Malawi’s business towards a broader base of services such as mobile banking, data, and upgrading the network system among others.

“As a mobile service provider, we want to provide affordable communication access to all Malawians as well as placing more emphasis on the organisation’s corporate social responsibility,” he said.

Schlittke said as an economist he is much interested in investment in communication and also economic impact of communication in the country.

He revealed that 10 per cent penetration of telecommunication can contribute to one and half per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country.

The new CEO however commended his predecessor for a good job he has done during his tenure of office and promised to continue from where he left.

Meanwhile former Airtel Malawi Finance Director Amadou Dina who was acting as a Managing Director has been promoted to be the Chief Executive Officer for Airtel Seychelles.
