Alliance One spends K480m in tree planting exercise
Alliance One Tobacco, a multinational tobacco company has spent US$1 million (about K480 million ) in tree planting exercise.
This was disclosed on Friday when the company was winding up the tree planting exercise at its newly acquired Mpale Estate, in Madisi, Dowa, which the company launched during the onset of the rain season.
Company Leaf Director, Ronald Ngwira, told reporters during the function that the hectors of land that have been planted are 9,765 hectors while 24, 411,750 seedlings have been planted.
Since the establishment of Forestry department under the agronomy Department, Alliance One has invested significantly towards the same.
“Our target in by 2021 is to be self sufficient in wood supply from these and other resources, as part of our commitment to the country’s environmental management,” said Ngwira.
He is also encouraging farmers not to use natural trees for curing of tobacco in order to avoid deforestation.
During the function, Company Managing Director Hugh Saunders was also in attendance to witness the event.
