Tension in Zomba city as there is anger at Cobbe Barracks of Malawi Defence Force (MDF) after a patrol police officer fatally shot a soldier on Saturday around 11 pm.
Crowds gathered at Zomba police sation on Sunday to get the information on the shooting incident.
MDF spokesman spokesman Lt Col. Francis Kakhuta-Banda confirmed that the shooting victim Lance-corporal Price Lameck from Pwandaphwanda village, TA Nkalo Chiradzulu was a soldier at Cobbe Barracks.
“Currently details of the deceased are not ready as his next of kin has not been located and communicated to,” he saind.
“Investigation as to what led to the shooting are being taken to come up with a comprehensive report.
Sources said he was shot dead while coming from a pub outside the barracks with his in-law and got into a figt with police officers when he tried to get away a gun from patrol officer.
The solider was being questioned on rogue and vagabond by police on night patrol.
The police spokesman for eastern region Thomeck Nyaude said the registry has recorded a shooting incident without details.
Police reportedly abandoned the soldier who was taken by some traders to Zomba Central Hospital where he was announced dead.
Nyasa Times sources at the barracks indicate there is “anger” in the way police killed the solider.
