Angry people beat Malawi cops, vandalise Enukweni Police Unit: Suspects arrested
People of Kawanda Village in Enukweni, Mzimba District Thursday night vandalised Enukweni Police Unit in anger after the police could not release to them a suspect apprehended for murder.
Enukweni Police Officer -in-charge Henry Kamanga said Friday that the people stormed the police unit around 7:00pm demanding the release of Geoffrey Nkhambule who was nabbed earlier in the day for allegedly stabbing to death Jabin Chirwa.
“We had already referred the suspect to Mzuzu when the mob came and when we told them that the suspect was not with us they started smashing windows and doors.
“When the situation became dire, I and some officers on duty had to run for our lives,” he said, while trying to put some broken furniture in his office in place.
He, however, said no office equipment was reported missing and could not tell whether any officers who were on duty were injured.
“Everyone was running for their lives; so I wouldn’t know if anyone was injured even though I wouldn’t be surprised if there were injuries because the situation was deadly,” he said.
However, Neliya Gondwe, one of the eye witnesses confirmed to that during the fracas, some police officers were beaten.
The police on Friday morning apprehended several suspects after conducting an emergency raid in the area.
