Angry UDF members assault Makwangwala

Secretary General for the United Democratic Front UDF Kennedy Makwangwala was Tuesday morning assaulted by party members who are not happy with how he runs the party’s affairs.

Makwangwala has been accused of orchestrating divisions that have rocked the former ruling party.

An eye witness told Nyasa Timesthat the incident happened at the party’s Head Offices in Limbe when angry mob stormed into Makwangwala’s office and dragged him out and started beating him up accusing him of bringing about confusion in the party.

The defenseless Makwangwala was rescued by some well-wishers who whisked him away from the commotion that ensued.

Both Makwangwala and UDF’s second Vice president Humphreys Mvula had confirmed about the incident.

Mvula said Makwangwala was beaten up by party officials from Ndirande Township who he said were sent by the party’s suspended district governor Macdonald Symon.

“We have information that it is Symon who sent these thugs to beat up Makwangwala. In fact Makwangwala had all the powers to retaliate but he couldn’t do so because he is a man of self respect”, Mvula told a private radio, Radio Islam in its Tuesday evening news bulletin.

Mvula explained that although those who had assaulted Makwangwala are party members, they cannot regard them as such this time around because what they have done is a criminal act.

“These people are thugs, they are criminals and as party we cannot tolerate this. It is sad that they are beating up people while we are in the process of rebranding the party”, said Mvula.

However Symon had distanced himself from the allegation.
