Angry vendors, PP followers clash in Zomba

Business came to a stand still at Chinamwali Trading Centre in the Eastern Region district of Zomba on Friday when angry vendors clashed with People’s Party (PP) followers who uprooted flags of opposition political parties from their shops and also on trees.

The incident happened a few moments before Malawi President Joyce Banda passed through the place on her way to Balaka.

One of the vendors who spoke on condition of anonymity told Nyasa Times that a lorry carrying youths clad in PP colours arrived at the Trading Centre.

“They jumped out from the lorry and started removing flags belonging to opposition DPP [Democratic Progressive Party] and UDF [United Democratic Party] parties. They shouted all sorts of words and claimed that they are government,” he said.

It was from this moment that hell broke loose as some angry vendors pounced on one of the PP followers and started beating him.

Most of the PP followers fled the scene but promised to return after President Banda had passed through the place.

Shops were still closed by noon as the owners waited for the situation to calm down. PP district governor for Zomba, Fabiano Chibade declined to comment on the matter when Nyasa Times wanted to know the reasons behind the act.
