Another ‘thief’ burnt to death: Malawi mob justice on increase

An unknown suspected thief in Malawi’s commercial city of Blantyre has been burnt to death by a mob of vigilantes.

The horrific killing happened  in the densely inhabited and squatter township of Chirimba Township.

According to eye witnesses, the suspect wanted to steal from one of the area’s residents in the wee hours of New Year’s day when his planned home heist ended fatally.

What started as a promising day for the man, if his mission had worked, ended in sorrow and horror when he was captured, beaten before being set ablaze by the relentless citizens.

The suspect faced an instant punishment after he reportedly also hacked the owner of the house he had broken into.

“I was in my house when I just heard people shouting outside. The people tortured him before setting him on fire,” an eye witness who resides close to the scene of the incident told Nyasa Times.

Lately, cases of mob justice have been on the increase in the country as Malawians’ frustration over insecurity worsens forcing the angry people to take the law into their hands.
