Anything new in Chakwera’s SONA? Here are 10 new things Malawi leader has said
President Lazarus Chakwera has delivered his first State of Nation Address (SONA) in Lilongwe on Friday. Nyasa Times captured 10 things that are new in his speech—something we have never heard before.

1: Admitted that the Executive is too powerful, the Judiciary is too underfunded, the Legislature is too subservient, and all three are too corrupt. Wow!
2: He will construction of the state of the art Military Referral Hospital in Area 35, Lilongwe
3:He will appear before this Session of Parliament three times to answer Members’ questions.
4:He will establish the Probate and Family Division of the High Court, as well as the Financial Crimes Division to fast track the disposal of corruption cases.
5:He will ensure that, by 2022, Senior Resident Magistrates are available in all 28 Districts.
6:He will construct beautiful Judiciary Headquarters across Malawi Parliament Building in Lilongwe.
7:He will construct 193 Constituency Offices to serve as permanent points of access for Malawians to reach their MPs. He will also construct official residences for MPs within their constituencies to ensure they are part of the communities they represent.
8:He will increase enrolment in universities from 36,000 in the 2019/20 academic year to nearly 48,000 in the 2020/21 academic year.
9:He will launch National Youth Service which will train 3000 youths in vocational, livelihoods and technical skills; train 300 youths in Business; provide start-up tools and equipment to 600 youths; link 600 youths to Financial lending Institutions; engage 1000 youths in entrepreneurial endeavors; and equip 35,000 youths with leadership skills.

Zonse mchabe bola dpp inachoka m’boma kaye feteleza asisa kaya sasitsa kaya… ine ku mtimaku mbee kuwona a dpp ali makutu balala kotsusa
How about a ‘new’ idea?
How about in the 193 constituencies, His Excellency proposes to construction 193 homes for the needy.
Or they could be orphanages.
He could even doing a Public-Private partnership to construction blocks of houses for minimal or token rents.
This could spur housing development in Malawi as well as assist those too desperate to find decent accommodation.
Of course, such schemes are open to corruption.
But can you seriously tell me that this doesn’t sound better than 193 houses and offices for our already quite decently compensated Members of Parliament?
These men, and ladies, get fairly generous salaries, allowances, not to mention duty free cars.
They can sort out their own accommodation.
‘Man of God’ indeed.
“… If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.”
Matthew 19:21
There goes the promises and decrees again, we are here waiting for the reports that those are done indeed. #Tonse philosophy should be in practical and never only in theory.
Remember 1 million job siyama cadet ndya ife anthu omwe tinavotela tonse government ndye zumapezeka ma Dpp supporter ndamene akukhala pasogolo kujijilika zisakukhuzeni ife mcp n utm ndiyathu basi
Maybe one day we will read about something actually done
What the Tonse government has been able to show, no future governments will not take Malawian for granted. Since multi democracy governments have cheated us. We thank God for bringing the Tonse government to expose thieves. Chakwera, Chilima and Mai Joye Banda you are the hope of our children. God bless you all
Ministers who double as Members of Parliament will also be resident in their respective constituencies?
Gentlemen the President can miss a point or whatsoever. I am sure that he cannot deserve any insults out of it.Peter Mutharika promised many things but he was busy stealing money from both the donors and that of taxpayers money. For instance Gertrude and I were together in parliament but today she is too rich than many people around the World.Where did she get all that money.Ladies and Gentlemen let us write educative matters on this page and unfortunately the Nyasa times writes everything even the rubbish issues. I am from the South and further in Parliament with opposition party. To say the truth of the matter Bingu Wa Mutharika (MHSRIP) did extremely good during his first five year rule but and made his young brother as minister of education. You know what exactly had happened at education and he completely caused havoc. This brother also used a flight that belonged to Army directed by his brother but all those activities were completely wrong but people could just see it on the ground. Come to voting pattern you know it how it went and with the Judgement contcourt recently I was extremely happy because we are used to steal in offices, projects, state residences etc. Things turned worse when Peter became a president of Malawi and believe you this is the time fifteen ministers from the South played games in all places mentioned above>Wachiona Ndani, KUBA in all ministries took part. I am currently in the opposition but will stay it there until the end of dpp.
The headline is in English and it says, ’10 new’ things.
So basically he has said nothing, once again.
Brand new houses for MPs and great big buildings for the judges.
The MPs and the judges are the really needy ones in Malawi.
For God’s sake, we don’t want anything ‘new’.
Whatever happened to cheap fertiliser???
That it? No much to write home about, eeh!
New things yet old promises were not mentioned. Free Escom, water connections, civil servants promotions and salary increment.
We all know how the Flames play flowery football without scoring. We hold our patience to see how the 10 things will change the lives of Malawians if implemented.
Why has he not talked about what they promised Malawians; 1 million jobs in 6 months, 3 months already gone but no single job created. In fact, people have lost jobs instead; universal fertiliser subsidy instead of continuing with DPP targeted subsidy; elderly people stipend of K15000 per month. Yet he is promising new things before they implement promises. These are greatest liars of our time.
Tonse is on the right path, Getrude and Chisale are no longer mismanaging our tax money. The saved money will do wonders to you and your poor of the poorest relatives
You have a good president believe me. Cherish these times and pray for him that he doesn’t side track. Avoid politicking at this moment and Malawi will prosper. Here in zambia we are admiring you people in malawi. The people of Malawi have done some great the whole world is in admiration for. God bless malawi and its people. Ambuye akale Nanu.
if I remember very well that promise was made by Chilima, 1 million jobs was for UTM party which is right now on the background, however that does not mean Chakwera won’t do that because he has already started on that one.
Can see if implemented a million jobs being implemented
Ukanama sikuchedwa kucha. 2022 sipatali mind you 3 months has already gone with ZERO being done so far. 193 officies? Kayaaa🤷🏽🐒🙈🐕🦺
Zadza ndi yani za 193 offices Kaya nyumba za ma MP?
We will support you Mr President to develop this country because there is no where we can call home apart from Malawi
If you were not energized by this speech, you must be knocking on your coffin lid.
the idea is not to energise us. we do that spiritually but rather to tell us about the progress on their earlier promises. old people’s stipend etc
Kuyankhula nde mumatha… Still waiting for action Sir
Sound good but start with what you promised on campaign,we are still waiting for actions.
Implement them
Malawi doesn’t have constituency offices for MPs ? Lol. No wonder they don’t know what they were elected for
Number 7. Kumanga ma office in constituances, its a good idea but zowamangila ma Mp manyumba, nononono. That money can be used to renovate and or construct new houses of our hardworking police officers and teachers ndi zina ndizina. Previous government did so well for starting the area 30 project. Timangileni misika ya makono, milatho, gulani ma ambulance. Ngati nzeru zikufoila kafunseni Namadingo akuonjezeleni ma plan. I repeat zowamangila ma Mp manyumba, nonono hell no!!!
Why is it he needs to build residences for the MP’s when it should be law MP’s should live in the constituency in the first place like most other countries. How can an MP represent a Constituency if they do not know the needs and wants of that constituency it is no wonder 60% of MP’s are not RE-Elected.
Constituency offices is a great idea so that MP’s can be working in their constituency when parliment is not in session.
Excuse me,i dont see anything new here.plans to construct judicial complex in lilongwe were cooked during the time of bingu and designs are already there.talking about resident magistrates in districts ,the judiciary bought vehicles way before the elections to cater for incoming resident magistrates in districts.in fact,SRMs are already there in districts.the probate and family division is already there at the high court.read section 6 of the courts amendment act,u will see that it was establish already.the military hospital was one recommendation by the commission inquiry on the death of bingu wa mutharika. I expected something new and exciting but l m loss for words.
Goat of the president
Za Gule basi, boma siku dambwe. Tikumatcha ikatha 100 days.
Fuel wakwelanso, eish.
That’s the man i toiled very much to get the seat.
The question is how! This is theory when it comes to implementation mpamene pali ntchito
I am ashamed of mmbusa Chakwera. These points are very very weak. The only good one is that of building constituency offices. It is also not necessary to build Residential Houses for MPs. Chakwera is indeed an empty tin.
On official residences for MPs in their constituencies is a welcome move because anyone elected regardless of a party he/she represent will be staying in that house during his/her tenure and this applies to consitituency office where there will a national flag flying wow this is what i have been dreaming about if i were to be elected president this is what i could do as well so i whole heartedly in support of this and pls implement it. In this way the eletorates will be able to see their MP at these official houses and offices. Though i belong to another party but this is national development so i support it bcoz thats the way to go anything of national development and of good course lets support one another and this should go anyone in the country politics behind lets focus on development our time when it comes in 2025 will also have the support from the opposition.
Kind of forcing the donkey to the sea to drink but failing to force it to drink. Over 95% of MPs live in cities where many of them do businesses. Not that they can’t afford to live in their own constituencies but they run away from everyday visits from people on petty requests: “timati tipemphe chithandizo njala kunyumbaku”, another one comes: ” timati tipemphe coffin kwachitika maliro”, and comes another: “mwana wasankhidwa Ku Sekondale ndiye tangokhala school fees palibe” and the list goes on.
Anthu ndi maso.
Forgot to write, he will wear branded masks with embroidery. What’s the point of having face masks branded with coat of arm logos. These are the kind of over priced supplies to state house that we complain about. Even boris Johnson for all his childishness never puts on such masks. Africa will remain poor
Zex, I agree. A Chakwera please be on the forefront nipping the the temptations in the bud. Don’t accept branded things like face masks etc, these are unnecessarily expensive and will derail you from the requirements that people voted the Tonse Alliance for. Stay the course, do those first then the others. Izi za nyumba za ma MP zachokera kuti? Up market houses, area 10 type in a sea of mud built houses in the villages? How are you thinking Mr president? Do build the rural areas and the MP can take care of himself house-wise. Office, yes but not house please. Build people’s houses to meet real need etc, not appeasement development. Someone Tonse Alliance inalonjdza ndi zokwanira and that is why you were elected. Izi za nyuwanizi ngati zinali zofunika bwanji simunazilonjeze pa campaign kuti anthu akuvotereni? I hope you are not slowly getting astray. Stay the course please. First, have a clear plan to clear the rubble. Second, have a plan (spanning over 5 years) for implementing all that you promised during campaign. Don’t leave out Chilima’s promises as these are low lying fruits to pick and show for. Your high 5 be the overall policy guiding principles of your administration. That way you will win again, together. That is all that matters to us Malawians. Dzimvele mtolo!!!
Sounds good on paper
It starts on Paper Kumene!!
What about in your head
Good ideas should first be captures on paper
Very promising indeed. But the feeling of too much power is poor stewardship. These are people who will only not steal because there is no money.. Not that they cant still.
It’s good SONA if implimented
