Armed gang attack Malawian pastor

A Malawian pastor will live to remember 15th February, 2013 after he narrowly escaped death alongside his family members when a 20-plus armed gang broke into his house.

Pastor Masamba of Church of God at Matindi Trading Centre (Lunzu) in Malawi’s commercial city of Blantyre could not believe his eyes when the thugs raided his house but spared their life.

“All the thugs were carrying machetes and other weapons but had no fire arm. They broke into the house and first demanded our cell phones,” a shocked Pastor Masamba’s wife told Nyasa Times correspondent.

The pastor’s residence is situated at a place called Seventeen, some two kilometers from Matindi Trading Centre.robbery

According to our correspondent, the gang raided the house just after 10.00pm and started their mission by poisoning the pastor’s security dog before roping the guard on duty.

The gang did not end there but proceeded to the church where they also tied two people who were protecting it.

“They demanded money but after they were told there was no money they asked for church keys suspecting that was where the Pastor was keeping the money,” she explained.

She said the robbers then searched every corner of the house and after failing to find any money they just took away other household items including bread and sugar which the family was to use the following day.

The pastor, who is also a teacher at Matindi Community Day Secondary School in the area, including his male family members were beaten using the machetes and left with bruises.

They were also roped and locked in the storeroom but all female members including the wife were left unhurt.

After the house operation, the gang proceeded to the church where they took away a public address system which the church was using.

The thieves also stole bags of cement, lime, new keyboards which were still being kept in a container, among others before vanishing into thin air leaving all female family members unhurt.

The gang left the scene just after 12 midnight together with a bunch of keys for the church, house and container, according to the pastor’s wife.

There was no immediate comment from the police as phones for the spokesperson could not be reached.
