Malawi  Police in Nkhata Bay are hunting for three unknown armed criminals who broke into Strabag International camp site at Mpamba and stole items worth K5, 6 million.

Strabag International is a Germany construction company that is rehabilitating the Mzuzu-Nkhata Bay M5Road to the tune of K17 billion.

Nkhata Bay Police Spokesperson Sergeant Ignatius Esau explained that on 14th October, 2017 at around 3 am, three unknown criminals fired a shot to scare watchmen to steal the company’s property.

“One of them had a rifle which he used to fire a shot in the air to scare the watchmen who indeed run away without managing to identify any of them and the type of rifle used,” Sergeant Esau said.

He said the robbers broke the company’s workshop where they took a grinder and an avometre before they broke into the office of the commercial manager.

“They tried to break the cash chest but did not manage to open it. They only managed to take three Lenovo laptops.

“Then the criminals proceeded to the human resource office where they went away with two Lenovo laptops,” he said.

According to Nkhata Bay Police spokesperson, the criminals fired two shots into the air as they were escaping by climbing wire fence.

“Investigations are underway to arrest these criminals and recover the stolen property,” he said.
