Airtel Top 8 reigning Champions, Silver Strikers of Lilongwe have vowed not to relax after winning of the inaugural cup and lose sight of the TNM Super League race.

Coach Fazilli: No time to relax

Silver strikers claimed the silverware after defeating the “traditional cup inaugural winners” Mighty Be Forward Wanderers of Lali Lubani in Blantyre on post -match penalties 10- 9 at Bingu National Stadium (BNS) on Saturday before a capacity crowd.

The Airtel Top 8 reigning Kings aka the “Bankers” have a date and crucial encounter against TNM Defending Champions Kamuzu Barracks on Sunday at Civo stadium in the Lilongwe derby.

The encounter will set the pace of the two teams in what it is termed as a catch game for the title race as  Zomba based Red Lions are leading the pack with 11 points from five games.

The last time the two teams met in the league encounter, Kamuzu Barracks won the game 1-0 and the Sunday game is promising to be a tough one.

“ it’s nice that we have won the cup at the beginning of the season and this should not make us relax but we now need  to concentrate on the league,” Silver’s coach Lovemore Fazili said Wednesday in Lilongwe  at the end of the Airtel top 8 victory parade conducted in the townships of the city.

He said his charges need to work extra hard to show that winning the Top 8 cup was not a fluke but fruits of hard work and determination.

Fazili explained that his team wishes to collect maximum points against Kamuzu Barracks on Sunday during the Sunday’s match.

“We are indeed meeting the Defending Champions on Sunday at Civo and this is not an easy match for us. It hurts us when we recall that this is very same team that beat us twice in the FISD cup and League game last season. This time around we are aiming at revenging to what they did to us,” Silver’s Coach added.

He said winning of the Airtel Top 8 has made us to crave for more glory and we are hoping to do more in the league games by collecting maximum points at all cost.

“We will not relax and we will continue where we left last season by winning more games to increase our chances of claiming the title this season around,” Fazili hoped.

The general secretary for silver strikers, Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda thanked supporters and various stakeholders for joining them during the victory parade in the townships within the City of Lilongwe.

He said the support they have shown has encouraged us to do more this season and claim the lost glory for the team.

“This season is meant to harvest for our young team and last season it just a planting time. We are aiming at sweeping all the cups that we will come on our way this time around,” Nyirenda challenged.

Chairperson for Kamuzu Barracks Football Club, Major Gift Njete said they are not leaving any stone unturned for the Sunday’s encounter against Silver Strikers.

He said it will be a tough game and our team too is aiming at collecting maximum points in order to consolidate our chance of defending the title.

“It will not be an easy game. We know that they beat us in the Airtel Top 8 semi final at the same venue some two weeks ago but this time around it’s a ball game all together,” Major Njete summed up.

Silver strikers are on position number 15 on the log table with two points from two games played so far while Kamuzu Barracks are on positions 10 with 4 points from  three games.

Kamuzu Barracks tested a defeat at the hands of Mighty Be Forward Wanderers 1-0 during the opening the new season while Silver strikers had two away draws when they faced Premier Bet Wizards and Azam Tigers.
