BB, Mafco battle in Standard Bank Cup play-offs

The battle in the 2011 Standard bank knockout trophy rolls into life this weekend with the four voted teams set to clash for a place in the preliminary round of the competition.

Standard bank customers voted Bullets FC, Mafco, Red Lions and Epac to be part of the action this year. The draw to determine who meets who to identify two teams to join the six prequalified teams took place last week and it’s now time for battle.

Bullets FC who got most votes (4876) have a tricky date against stubborn Mafco at the Kamuzu stadium while Red Lions entertain Epac at Balaka Ground.

Ng'onamo: Tricky fixture

It should be a tough test for new coach Eddington Ng’onamo who was given a challenge to win the trophy when he was appointed coach a few weeks ago.

“It’s not going to be easy against Mafco but all we want is victory come Saturday,” he said.

Mafco have proved to be a hard nut to crack and have caused some upsets against the big guns, so an explosive encounter should be expected on Saturday.

Fam’s chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda told Nyasa Times that all is set for the play offs this and that people should expect fireworks.

“The waiting is now over and from an organisation point of view, all is set and as we highlighted at the draw, the games will start at 14:00 not 14:30,” he said.

After the play offs this weekend, the competition will go into the preliminary round on 05/11/11 where being guns will battle it out on home and away basis with return matches slated for 12/11/11.

Standard bank will dress all the 8 teams with the scheduled for 26 November.
