In an interview with Nyasa Times, Banda said he is happy to be part of the team uplifting the beach soccer sport in the country.

“As Sand Festival Family, we are happy to associate ourselves with Beach Soccer. In Malawi we used to play the game with a social element but now we are ready to take it to another level” Banda told Nyasa Times.

“The partnership [with Central Region Beach Soccer Committee] is very good because the moment we are promoting beach soccer, we are also promoting ourselves [Impakt Events] and our festival therefore it is a win-win situation” added Banda a musician and a parliamenterian for Balaka North Constituency.

He however kept a tight lid on the next portion but promised to continue assisting Central Region Beach Soccer Committee whenever a need arises.

“People should expect alot big and good things as we progress” said Banda.

Munali FC of Lilongwe were on 31st December crowned champions of the 2016 Sand Festival Central Region Beach Soccer League during the final league games played at the Kambiri Lodge in the Central Region Lakeshore District of Salima.

They finished top with 28 points two ahead of second placed Livingstonia Beach and Parachute of Salima who finished with 26 and 25 points.

Munali received K300,000 for emrging champions while runners up and third placed teams received K200,000 and K150,000 respectively.

According to Central Region Beach Soccer Committee (CRBSC) General Secretary Allie Mwachande, the competition was a success.

Mwachande said he was happy with the stiff competition among the participating teams and that the league ended in time as planned.

He also took his time to thank Honourable Lucius Banda for sponsoring the league.

“I am glad that everything went according to plan and let me specifically thank Honourable Lucius Banda for helping us achieve our dream of launching a beach soccer league” Mwachande said.

“It hasn’t been that easy as you are quiet aware we started with a fundraising which beside his busy schedule, he volunteered to sing for us as part of fundraising where we raised K500,000 and he never
stopped there, he pumped in extra personal K500,000” added Mwachande.

Sand Festival Central Region Beach Soccer League was launched in August at the Livingstonia Beach Hotel and real action commenced in September with K1 Million prize money.

The games have been played at Livingstonia Beach until towards the end of the season when CRBSC decided to engage Management of Kambiri Lodge to accommodate to more people in following and watching the sport.

CRBSC officials said the decision was made after noticing that there was very low patronage at Livingstonia since most people could not afford to pay K3000 gate fee to enter the premises.
