Belgium leader jets in Malawi for official visit

Kris Peeters, Minister-President of the Flemish Government in Belgium, arrived in the country on Tuesday for a three day official visit.

Peeters was welcomed at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ephraim Chiume and Minister of Agriculture, Prof. Peter Mwanza.

The Belgian leader will, during the visit, hold discussions with Malawi President Joyce Banda and a number of Cabinet ministers as well as senior government officials on development programmes being funded by his government.

Government said on Wednesday, Peeters will open a regional seminar on “the Implementation and Promotion of Economic Social Cultural Rights: Discrimination in the Context of the Right to Food in Southern Africa”, being organised by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights with support from the Flemish and Norwegian governments.

Cooperation between Malawi and Flanders dates back to 2006. It is the second time that a leader of the Flemish Government will be visiting Malawi after the 2007 visit of the then Minister-President, Yves Leterme.
