The Government of Iceland has donated seven Toyota Hilux vehicles to Malawi in a move aimed at strengthening service delivery across five district councils.

Iceland backs Malawi service delivery drive with seven new vehicles

Under the arrangement, Mangochi, Balaka and Nkhotakota district councils will each receive one vehicle, while Machinga and Salima will be allocated two vehicles apiece.

The handover ceremony took place at Club Makokola in Mangochi, where Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Dr Ben Malunga Phiri accepted the vehicles on behalf of the Malawi Government.

Phiri described the donation as a timely boost to local authorities, saying the additional transport capacity would help councils carry out their responsibilities more effectively and improve the delivery of public services.

Iceland’s Head of Mission, David Bjarnason, said the vehicles form part of the embassy’s broader support programme in the five districts, which is focused on improving access to essential services and strengthening local government operations.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiary councils, Machinga District Commissioner Martha Magreta Sineta said the councils would ensure the vehicles are managed responsibly and used for their intended purpose in support of development and service delivery efforts.
